The legal entity for LI's electricity contracting is referred to as “LILCO d/b/a LIPA.” In other words, "LILCO doing business as LIPA."
All contracts for power supply, such as the 20 year contract with Caithness Long Island Energy for CL-I, are handled
by LILCO. As a result, LIPA is able to keep their contracts secret under
NY business law.
To clarify the LIPA vs. PSEG confusion, it is important to realize that LIPA is still responsible for the oversight and ownership of the grid, while, effective January 1st of 2014, PSEG became responsible for managing and branding the operation. In this manner, the brand, LIPA, has effectively been removed from the "public eye."
Therefore, when you see articles referring to "LIPA" or even "LILCO," do not dismiss as inaccurate or outdated. Quite simply, LIPA, as part of LILCO, is still operating as the company behind the curtain.
